Skin Exposures:
If you splash or spill a chemical on yourself:
Small Exposure:
- Rinse the exposed area under the sink for at least 15 minutes
- Have another lab worker contact one of the EAS Chemical Spills Designates; they all have their first aid.
- Seek medical attention at the UofA Hospital
- Report the incident, fill out a WCB report, and notify the EAS Safety Committee
Large Exposure:
- Remove all clothing
- clothing will wick and hold the chemical closer to your body and cause a deeper burn from a corrosive chemical
- Use the safety shower for at least 15 minutes
- Have another lab worker contact one of the EAS Chemical Spills Designates; they all have their first aid.
- Seek medical attention at the UofA Hospital after showering
- always take a hardcopy of the SDS sheet with you
- Report the incident, fill out a WCB report, and notify the EAS Safety Committee
Eye Exposure:
If you splash or get a chemical in your eye
- Immediately use the eyewash for at least 20 minutes.
- Contact one of the EAS Chemical spills designates
- Seek medical attention at the UofA Hospital
- Report the incident, fill out a WCB report, and notify the EAS Safety Committee
EYE DAMAGE CAN OCCUR WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF EXPOSURE! GET TO AN EYE WASH STATION ASAP!
Ingestion or Inhalation
- Notify a lab mate
- Immediately call PADIS (1-800-332-1414) or HSE (780-492-5555)
- Consult the SDS sheet
- Immediately go to the University Hospital
