EAS Online WHMIS/Safety Training Program

Welcome to the Department of Earth & Atmospheric on-line safety program. The Department is required to keep records of all persons who take the WHMIS/Safety training. Department policy is that all employees, students and volunteers complete the 2015 WHMIS and the EAS General Safety Training Program. Safety training specific to a research or operational area is provided by the supervisor of that area.

Even if you have taken WHMIS training elsewhere, you must complete this course.

You are required to complete both the U of A online 2015 WHMIS program and the EAS General Safety Training program.

All new EAS personnel are:

  • Faculty
  • Support Staff
  • PDF’s
  • Visiting Scientists
  • Graduate Students
  • Volunteers
  • Summer and Visiting Students
  • Undergraduate Students working in EAS research laboratories as part of their course work

 Online 2015 WHMIS:

Go to the following URL: https://www.ualberta.ca/environment-health-safety/training/whmis

The link will take you to the Department of Environmental Health & Safety’s Training page.  Scroll down and click on the WHMIS course – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.  You will have to sign in to view the course. NOTE: Internet Explorer may not work!  Please use Firefox or Chrome as your browser.

You will now be able to complete the course material.  Please note that you will not be able to complete the quiz until you have viewed all of the course material.  If you are new to the Moodle platform, there is a short instructional entitled “Navigating Moodle” – please read this first!

You MUST identify where you work – that is – what department are you from.  Please sign up indicating that you are from the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Science.

Once you have read the WHMIS information, there is a short quiz; a grade of 75% is a pass.  Then print off a copy of the WHMIS certificate and send a copy to the Department Safety Officer: Katie Nichols.    If you have any questions please contact the EHS eLearning Coordinator Samantha Walker.

EAS Safety:

After you have completed the 2015 WHMIS training, you then need to read the Department of EAS Safety Program and take the test at the end of the program. The EAS Safety programs requires a grade of 80% or greater to be considered a pass. All grading results are confidential and are sent to Katie Nichols, who then files the information into the department records.  See below to start the program.

If you have already read the EAS Online Safety Training Program and did not pass the exam, please take the exam again. You are allowed 2 attempts to passed the exam with 80% or more.

The Department of Earth & Atmospheric Safety Committee advises that you review your WHMIS and Departmental Lab Safety training every three years while you attend or are employed by the University of Alberta.
