Chemical Inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

PIs or lab supervisors are responsible for maintaining a complete and comprehensive Chemical Inventory for all their laboratory spaces. The inventory should have:

  • Chemical name
  • CAS number
  • Amount (weight or volume)
  • Location of where the chemical is stored
  • Associated hazards
  • Storage category
  • Date received
  • Date opened

The Safety Data Sheet for each corresponding chemical should also be readily available for everyone’s reference. The SDS must be dated/reviewed within the last three years or be the most recent version of the SDS. Out of the date SDS sheets should be replaced with the most recent version.
